MARRCH Wanted to Know: Who Are Minnesota’s Licensed Alcohol and Drug Counselors?
In 1998 Minnesota began the process of licensing alcohol and drug counselors (LADCs). Licensure transformed the field of chemical health. However, much discussion remains about the exact nature of this transformation – Who are we? What kinds of work do we do? How long do we stay in our jobs? How much do we earn? MARRCH wanted to know the answers to these and many other questions.
These fundamental questions had not been asked in a meaningful, statistical manner since licensure began leaving treatment professionals, facilities and government agencies an information void. For MARRCH, an association dedicated to serving those practicing in the field, this information was deemed essential to help the field move forward.
Between July 15, 2008 and October 26, 2008, MARRCH surveyed all 1,765 Licensed Alcohol and Drug Counselors (LADC) and Temporary Permit Holders (TPH) in Minnesota. This was done by mailing or e-mailing a survey invitation letter to all LADCs and TPHs using a list purchased from the Minnesota Board of Behavioral Health and Therapy. More than 45 percent of LADCs and TPHs responded to this survey making this, by far, the best source of data on the field available.
